Description

Jellyfish Eyes Black 1 (2004) sits right in the sweet spot of Takashi Murakami’s early-2000s output—an era where his “Superflat” language became instantly recognisable worldwide. Murakami’s practice collapses the boundaries between fine art and commercial culture, drawing equally from traditional Japanese visual heritage and the high-gloss vocabulary of anime, manga, and contemporary branding. The result is work that looks deceptively playful while being meticulously constructed and conceptually sharp.
In the Jellyfish Eyes motif, Murakami builds a character-world that feels cute and futuristic at once. Against the deep black field, the colours read with extra intensity—creating a crisp, graphic impact that’s both pop and strangely psychological, as if the image is staring back. It’s a strong example of Murakami’s ability to make “flatness” feel loud, alive, and collectible.
This example is an offset colour lithographic print on paper, dated 2004, measuring 50 × 50 cm. It is hand-signed in silver marker and hand-numbered 236/300 (also in silver marker, lower right). The print was published by Kaikai Kiki Co., Ltd., Tokyo. Kept in good condition, it has never been framed and was stored away from light.
